Overview:

This exercise creates a conversation between our own work and other paintings. What can we learn from viewing other work?

Materials:

• 1 sheet of Bristol paper
• Oil sticks, and or
• Acrylic paints with brushes

Transcript

Process:

• Research some top abstract painters. Choose one, two, or three paintings that speak to you.
•
Draw and paint your own piece in response to the specific thing in each painting you like most. Don’t copy it; instead, let it guide you to express your own version of it.
• Title your work “Ode to…” to remind you of your conversation.

Sketchbook Reflection:

• Jot down some favorite artists and paintings you come across in your research.
•
Make a note about what specifically interests you about their work. For example: color, line quality, shading, layering, texture, size, shapes, forms, etc.

Resources:

• Top 100 Abstract Painters (visual arts cork)
