Overview:

Let's revisit this classic art lesson and dig a little deeper... the practice of seeing and drawing negative space shifts our perspective into wholeness, strengthening our individual style.

Materials:

• Oil pastels
• Bristol paper

Transcript

Process:

• Choose an item and look at it normally for a minute.
• Then, shift your focus to the space around it for another minute.
• Next, draw the surrounding space as if it were solid, filling it in and leaving the positive space white.

Sketchbook Reflection:

• Think of a situation in your life. Now expand your awareness to see the bigger picture around the situation. What is the greater essence at work here?
• Is there something detailed you've been really focused on lately? Step back and see the whole picture. What else does it include?

Resources:

• Types of Hatching and Cross-Hatching (craftsy)
