Overview:

An examination of the values we share with mythological archetypes, in order to harvest our dearest stories for timeless messages.

Materials:

• Bristol paper and or sketchbook
• Oil pastels or pencils, or
• Magazine cut-outs / computer printouts

Transcript

Process:

• In your sketchbook, reflect on these questions:

1. Which characters from your favorite movies and TV shows resonate with you most? List three qualities of each.

2. Investigate the Major Arcana of the Tarot deck. Which cards speak to you most?

3. Look around your space. What figures, characters, people are represented with pictures or visual keepsakes?

4. If you’re familiar with any mythological traditions (Greek, Native American, Viking, African, Vedic, etc), what characters and deities resonate with you most, and why?

5. What’s your mythical life story, with you as the hero? What unique challenges have you overcome? What are your greatest lessons?

• On a sheet of Bristol paper, draw or paint the characters and symbols you’re most drawn to, abstractly or representationally. Optionally, use print outs of your archetype, and either draw or paint on top of them, or create a collage with the print outs.
